Two current candidates for the GOP presidential nomination are Mormon: Mitt Romney and Jon Huntsman. They are not the first Mormons to run for the US presidency. That was Joseph Smith in 1844. They do however share a common ancestor, Parley Pratt, ( great, great grandfather, one of original founders of the Mormon religion, a polygamist and one of the electioneer missionaries in Joseph Smith’s run for the US presidency). Debate and polls indicate that many voters would not vote for a Mormon today. The Evangelical movement suggests that Mormonism is not a Christian religion and adds to the debate. Land of the Saints sheds light on some of the lesser-known history of this movement.
